Schedule AC Maintenance to Reduce Your Home’s Carbon Footprint

Every time the air conditioning system in your Dalton, Georgia, home cycles, it uses some electricity. In most places, electricity is primarily generated by burning fossil fuels. The more electricity your home uses, the bigger its carbon footprint. Fortunately, you can schedule AC maintenance to reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

Change the Air Filter

A dirty air filter could lower your air conditioner’s energy efficiency by as much as 20 percent. You should check the air filter once each month. Most air conditioners use disposable filters. If it’s dirty, replace it. At minimum, replace the filter every 90 days. Your service technician can also check and replace the air filter.

Lubricate the Motor and Fan

Over time, the lubricant on the moving parts of your air conditioner may become gummy and lose effectiveness. This causes excess wear and tear on the metal. During a maintenance visit, your service technician lubricates the parts so that they glide effortlessly. This increases the efficiency of the air conditioner and reduces the potential for malfunctions.

Clean the Equipment

AC maintenance also includes a thorough cleaning of the indoor and outdoor equipment. Outdoors, the coils, fins and fan blades may accumulate dust, dirt or debris. Sticks, leaves or insects may have worked their way into the housing. Your service technician washes all of these off the system. Inside, the service technician bleaches the condensate drain and tightens any loose connections.

Verify the Thermostat’s Accuracy

During an AC maintenance visit, your service technician checks your thermostat. Older thermostats may lose calibration, causing them to make errors in temperature readings. Consider investing in a programmable or smart thermostat to reduce your home’s energy usage by as much as 30 percent.

In addition to lowering your home’s carbon footprint, AC maintenance improves your indoor comfort. AC systems that are properly maintained last longer and need fewer repairs, which will also save you money. At Dalton Heating & Air, we offer maintenance for all makes and models of air conditioning systems. Contact us today to schedule your next AC maintenance service.
